Sorry about that: running Hardy with all current updates, and wine 1.0
as distributed with those updates.

Probably, and if it's a *windows* permissions issue then that may be the
only way out.

Nope: it's the install disk for CorelDRAW 10. After giving up on it I
tried installing WP Office 12 and had success -- of a sort: nothing got
added to wine's "programs" menu, but working icons got added to the
Gnome top bar. Attempting to then add a patch file failed because it's a
.MSP and wine doesn't do those. Oh well; at least that's a more
clear-cut failure than I got with CXOffice, where the patch ran but the
app died. I'm aware that the Wine+CXOffice teams' efforts have been
mainly focused on MS apps and games and that Corel products are in no
way supported.

Regardless of how I came at the setup.exe file, whether direct from
nautilus or from wine's emulation of Explorer, and whether from user
status or root, the message was invariably something like "you do not
own this file" &/or "you do not have administrator status". I didn't try
with a terminal, and well understand that for access to error messages
that would be the way to go. It also became clear that notions of using
root status to do anything relating to installs under wine is for
die-hard gamers with bags of linux experience and really snarky
attitudes. 8-)
