It could be a bad power supply in turn affecting the datapath, I'd take
a close look at the external drive.
Is there any correlation to when the system locks and events that may
be happening at that time? For example if it locks up around 4AM when
cron.daily stuff fires, the additional disc I/O caused when slocate or
updatedb could trigger a hardware bug.
