You're thinking expected life, but that's not the worry. There's a
non-zero chance that a 80000 hour MTBF drive will fail significantly
before that. That non-zero chance is doubled when you've got two
drives that can fail.
And then there's the factor that if you use jbod instead of raid, then
if one drive fails, you'll still have the data on the other one.
