Regarding trying new Themes, see if there's a "Large Print" one
available. If not, try installing gnome-accessibility-themes-extras
and see if it shows up then.
Another easy way to fix things is to reduce your screen resolution
(e.g. if its 1280 x 1024, try reducing it to 1024 x 768). Note
however that if you have an LCD, it looks best at its native
resolution, so you can also try this:
System -> Preferences -> Appearance
Fonts (tab) -> Details... (button)
At the top is "Resolution"; the default (for my system) is 96 "dots per inch"
Try increasing that, e.g. to 128; see if that helps.

Can you copy in the message?
Can you run:
gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and copy the contents of the file so I can check to see what you have?

My parents are visiting this week, but I might be able to help a bit
via e-mail or on the phone in the late evenings :)
