An older machine here (Duron-800MHz, 512MB RAM, 8GB HD not incl. /home
partition) runs Mandrake 9.2 that no longer can update. It's used for
supervised web/email/etc but nothing too intensive. I'm looking for a quick
and painless move to something else. Galeon and Evolution are used now, so
Firefox should work fine but the latter means Gnome instead of KDE.
My main impetus is to minimize the low-level, simmering support issues that
only immediate family can inflict. Secondary is a curiosity about Ubuntu. Can
the collective genius come to consensus about an appropriate version? Or
should I stick with a Mandriva path? Or something else?
