I guess it was a false alarm. After booting back into my custom kernel,
everything seems to work fine. I have to say, though, that it's a bit
unnerving that Ubuntu can get confused enough to not allow me to become
root.

So, finally, I have security updates available, my SD slot works, my
wireless works natively (without ndiswrapper) and I have enabled root
logins to avoid a similar scare in the future. It must be almost time
to buy a new laptop, eh?
