Software raid is also faster than the "hardware RAID" sold on motherboards.

The solution to that is as simple as SMB. Setup a Linux machine with
lots of RAM, gigE, and lots of disks -- and share that over the network.
Put it somewhere cool and where noise isn't an issue (like the
basement, but on a raised surface in case of flood, and next to a UPS).
It's cheaper than one of those dedicated RAID boxes (like Netgear's
Readynas), and you'll get true performance (40-50 megabytes/second). I
tried a Netgear Readynas last week and couldn't get more than 8
megabytes a second from it (pretty lame for a device that costs as much
as a Linux machine with 4gb of RAM and a dual-core AMD CPU).
Then you can go ahead and use that dirvish backup tool as well :)
