The hardlink route works well, and I should move to that. I think a
one-way mirror still qualifies as a backup, but more for disaster
recovery than file recovery. Plus, currently I "rotate" by having more
than one external hard drive. Certainly --backup would have a place if I
left the drive attached, but I just manually the connect the correct
external drive when I do a backup (makes me feel nostalgic about tape
rotation schemes).
