That's been a feature of Linux installs for as long as I can remember...
at least going back to the earliest RedHats. I can't say for sure, but
I'd be surprised if the Slackware I used before that didn't also allow
that. Of course, the whole partitioning and formatting bit was a lot
more hands-on back then.
