Guess if it all depends on how you do it. Editing /etc/apt/sources.list
vs. using update-manager. You can do it via the apt edit although there
will be dragons to combat! apt-get dist-upgrade is your friend.

Update-manager will stop you at 7.10 at the moment, I think.

You _should_ go through the motions at least as far as 6.10 -> 7.04 and
I'd recommend you use update-manager for that first. I don't know if you
can go to 8.04 from there safely or not but personally I'd suggest the
7.10 step, too.

Well worth going to 7.10 regardless. I did my Mom's laptop a little
while ago and it fixed up a bunch of multimedia issues so she can watch
her curling via CBC now. :)
