Hi.
Name is Ruth. I've been lurking here a couple of weeks
to see what kind of linux users there are in
Saskatoon. I see now that you are noticing too, that
people are more open to Linux.
I just moved to Saskatoon last June after almost 24
years as a caregiver for my aged parents. Dad didn't
need such intensive care the last 10 years, so I set
out to learn how to publish my novel online, and ended
up teaching myself web design - AND in 2005 I
discovered Linux.
I knew no one else, but ordered Mandrake and tried
dual-booting with Win98 for a while. When Win98 died,
I went to Suse 9.3 and I haven't looked back since!
Long story short, I'm starting a small business where
I am prepared to train people in computers and how to
run a web business from. The key difference is that
I've got my 4 computer stations loaded with linux OS.
I'm planning to introduce all my students/interns to
life on a linux box. :)
At this stage I'm recruiting students and I'm
wondering how big the linux community is in this
city? Do you run into people who would be interested
if they could get some over-the-shoulder help for a
week or so?
At the moment I'm offering one-week afternoon courses
in computer basics, but I'd like by May to be ready to
start more in-depth internship courses. One with a
promise of helping them start up a web business at the
same time. Incubator style.
By the way, so far I've been scrounging cast off
computers and converting them. But I've discovered
that both the Sears and WalMart sites (USA only?) are
offering $199 linux boxes. They must be sensing a
market, eh?
Blessings & Thanks,
Ruth
