At work, we just use tar with daily differentials and once a week full
backup to a near-line staging server. From there stuff gets written to
LTO tape. We have a 24 tape library with a total capacity of 19.2TB.
It's economical for large amounts of data. Not so economical for only a
few hundred GB. We go back 6 weeks with routine backups for disaster
revovery or to recover accidentally deleted/modified data.

At home, I just copy everything onto a 750GB Seagate external drive. It
has copies of all the data off my servers, workstation and WinXP laptop.
It's disconnected when not in use.

I also burn data some data to DVD-RW on a rotating cycle. Basically all
the stuff that's not music or digital video. For music, I have all the
original CDs, for DV, I still have the footage on DV tape so I won't lose
data but it would take time to reconstitute if both the external backup
drive and internal primary storage died.
