I went through a bad batch of WRT54G routers about 1.5 years ago (V5's).
If you have one of those, update the firmware or swap with a different
or newer one. They didn't die, they just almost worked, as you describe,
which is really annoying.
If you are willing to risk bricking it, you can try the DD-WRT firmware
replacement. Mine worked, and not only has it been reliable ever since,
but you can change the power of the signal and all kinds of cool options
with that open firmware.
