You said the keyboard doesn't work, does that include ctrl+alt+f1?
After you've rebooted from a hang, does anything interesting show up
in /var/log/messages.0 or /var/log/Xorg.0.old?
I've got a hunch that you're running intel video, and the new intel
driver in gutsy is causing issues. If you _are_ running intel video,
try changing the driver to vesa. It'll be slower, but if it works
without hanging, then you can try reinstalling the older driver, which
should also bring back beryl if it worked before.
