Question on permutations

24 lists. from each list select most and least.
That to me is a 4P2=n(n-1) or 4*3=12 possible combinations for each list.
Now the question: Given 24 lists, is the total number of possible
results 12*24=288 or would it be 12^24 = 7.949e+25?
