Ubuntu slowing and hanging

Last little while, I've had problems with my Ubuntu (7.04) running very
slowly. In addition, if I have Adobe up and more than two other
directories open, when I minimize Adobe and try to bring it back up
again, it whites out on me. I then have to xkill it and close a couple
of the other directories to get things going again.

Checking Google got me either nothing, or some very complex things that
I don't really feel competent to try.

Computer slowdowns are apparently much more common with Windows systems,
or dual-boots. :-)
