I've used Dreamhost for about two and a half years no. Nothing
mission critical, but they've been reliable for what I need.
No worries about bandwidth or disk restriction with their plans
offering multi terrabyte transfer per month even on starter packages,
and disk space starting around 150. You get what they say you'll get,
and those limits increase weekly (two and a half years later I'm at
3.1TB per month transfer, and 256gb. I use probably 800mb a month
transfer and a few gigs of that space).
Any non-numbered promo code you use with dreamhost has been created by
someone else, and they make a bit for referring you. I think the
DEAL90 code would pay for about a months worth of hosting for the
creator (~$7). Dreamhost has a referral program that's actually
pretty well respected, and you can have it paid out or just kept on
balance to pay for future hosting.
They use a custom control panel, but it's actually very useable and
functional. A lot of mundane general actions like setting up a quick
database, phpmyadmin, forums, wordpress, etc.
Some downtime, but it's usually for a valid reason - and explained.
The front line support is via email, and has gone from fantastic to
poor to great again depending on the quality of staff they hire for
support - but they do learn from their mistakes and while their reps
were very hard to deal with a while last year, they're much better
now.
Overall they're a shared webhosting sure, but they're likely one of
the best. They also have more top tier choices for those not wanting
shared hosting, but it won't be as competetive in price as Dreamhost
is in the shared hosting market. You get way they say you'll get, and
they don't promise 5 9's when they can't deliver it.
(I'm one big walking advertisement I'm sure, but I've been very happy
with them for a long time now - for basic needs)
