Good to hear that its working now :)
python-qt3 is a dependency of the GUI part of the HP software that
comes with Ubuntu; I suspect that it didn't fix things per se, but you
needed it to run the program (hp-setup) that got it working.
The HP toolbox
System -> Preferences -> HPLIP Toolbox
also has that as a dependency.
BTW, did you run hp-align and/or hp-clean via that or did you use the
command line?
