usb serial device

has anyone been able to talk to a device like

/dev/usb/ttyUSB#

we have a searial interface on a device and wanted to cat out the stream
to a file. The pc running linux doesn't have any
serial ports so we are using a serial to usb cable and the usbserial.so
mod has been insmod(ed).
