I can't fathom a *nix system without mail, although I rarely use it to read
mail.

I run slackware on my linode. It might feel a little more familiar to a
FreeBSD user, although I haven't used FreeBSD in several years. If you
want to stay with Ubuntu, I'm sure you could find a console mode e-mail
client to install. I use mutt, there's also pine and a few other options.
