I eventually became used to the button layout and didn't change
anything. Though I don't use my Evoluent much any more.

I don't know if it would work, but can you use the ButtonMapping
option in xorg.conf?

"Option" "ButtonMapping" "5 6" # This would map the first and second
physical buttons to logical (X11) buttons 5 and 6.
