Sound not working

I have a k8n-dl motherboard and I'm running edgy.

lspci says "nVidia Corporation CK804 AC'97" and edgy detected the card
and install the snd_intel8x0 driver - this is the driver various
websites say should work.

I've checked that my speakers are plugged into the right port, and
that the mixer is unmuted with the volume turned up.

Then I open the gnome control panel, click on sound, and then try the
test button. No sound comes out. I've tried aplay and xmms, along
with the various output options they offer.

I'm not sure what else to try. Any suggestions?
