M$ has all kinds of interesting "upgrade rules". You can't do an upgrade
from XP Pro to any Home version, even Premium, which is supposed to be
more "advanced". Also, if your install of XP is broken and you are
thinking a re-install is necessary, an upgrade won't work. Luckily,
there is an easy workaround to install the Vista upgrade onto a blank
machine - though M$ has never acknowledged the workaround, it's the only
way to install that version on a pooched hard drive. I'm thinking maybe
they planned it that way all along.

There was a time when, though the Windows install was slow and cranky
(ie Win 98 and/or others), a novice was more likely to get Windows
installed than linux. I think that has changed. Ubuntu installs are
incredibly likely to work, including most if not all hardware. While a
Vista install on anything but a new machine, in my experience, has meant
hunting for drivers and patches to get some pieces working (sound and
modems, mostly, so far), often by trying drivers for other versions.

I'm thinking it's time to examine Crossover Office again, as the real
showstopper for many of my clients is the Word/Excel prerequisite -
which must work seamlessly and without adjustments or changes (OO just
isn't considered when the requirement is simply to have what "everyone
else has"). I'm thinking that for those who are not mandated to run
Outlook, Ubuntu and CrossOver Office may be a real solution.

Does anyone have recent Crossover Office experience?
