Unfortunately, the wheels are already turning: Windows Vista is bundled
on the majority of new PCs. These OEM profits are what push Microsoft
to money levels. Much like how Nintendo makes money when people buy
games for a Nintendo console (since they get a licence fee cut), MS gets
a pretty decent chunk of most PCs sold (except for Macs). Any dealer
offering a PC without Linux is probably losing out, since Microsoft only
sells Windows to OEMS at a deal if there are no "naked" ones going out
the door.

Windows 95 didn't sell-through very well, but the fact that you couldn't
get a new PC without it enabled it to go from a few million copies sold
in 1995 to a few tens of millions sold in 1996 (etc). Windows XP faced
a similar issue.

Anyone of my friends who has received a PC from a well-meaning relative
(EG: one which wasn't purchased from kit and manually built) has had to
deal with Vista coming along for the ride. How many of those PC flyers
have computers that aren't including Vista (now that Vista is out)?
