Well, ldd will try to link it vs. 64-bit or 32-bit libraries. I ran
Slackware in 64-bit mode for a while (via Slamd64), and it had a
parallel set of library files: the main ones were 64-bit and in lib64,
while the compatibility ones where in lib and were 32-bit. I think that
there was a mechanism by which ldd would select them, but I never became
very familiar with it because the wine applications I was running at the
time didn't enjoy 64-bit mode (plus other things, like the GLX drivers,
were also unhappy).

Perhaps there is a 32-bit compatibility FAQ out there that will shed
more light, since it should work fine.
