Greetings!
Time to put in my two cents worth :)
When I bought my current house back in 2002, it was an old house that
needed quite a few upgrades, including many to the electrical system.
Since moving in, I have been switching over to the CFL lights on an
attrition basis for old incandescents and some 50's vintage 4 foot
fluorescent that my wife didn't like, and all new lighting has been done
with CFL's as well.
My X10 switches do not work with the CFL lights. Nor do the multi-power
setting lamps that my wife likes in the living room. I use them
everywhere else, including both indoors and outdoors, and the only
irritant, is that the outdoor lights take about 2-3 minutes to warm up
to the point of giving off proper light. (On the other hand, once they
warm up, they seem to put out just as much light as they would have inside.)
I have had two fail (out of about 30ish) during the last 4 1/2 years,
both after only a couple hundred hours use, both in a location where the
temperature is not maintained well (winter temp can get down to -5,
summer temp will go over 40) and both in a low usage spot (light turned
on for 2-5 minutes 2-3 times a day).
Personally, I will keep using them, as I like the power savings, and
have no real complaints about the light quality.
