Alternatively, I can put a 100$ dumb switch in, and put one of my spare
gigEs into a computer in the front room (the MythTV box), using it as a
bridge between 100 and gigE segments. I also get the benefit of
promoting the MythTV box to gigE for when it streams to the frontends on
the gigE segment.

That spends power I was spending anyway, and costs less
:)
