Hi There Fellow Tuxers in Saskatoon

Although I live in Ottawa (Kanata actually) I need your long-range
assistance.

I have a friend who lives out towards Pike Lake who now wants to get
into computers after resisting for decades and has asked my advice.
Obviously, I can't help him directly at such a distance, but I am trying
to advise him.

Naturally, I want, if possible, to start him off from Square 1 with
Linux and it doesn't really matter which distro : I personally use
Fedora Core6 and SuSE 10.2 but, essentially, I don't want him to
experience the pitfalls of Windoze, especially Vista.

I am advising him on hardware, which is relatively easy, but I need
someone out there in Saskatoon to help get him started by setting up his
distro. Have you anyone in your group who can go out to near the potash
mine on RR3; his phone number is 306-242-8310 and he is Mr. Geoffrey
Galloway. If transportation is a problem Geoffrey is a most obliging
person and would be able to collect and return anyone who helps. It
would also be a help if someone other than myself (a friend since
childhood) can give him enthusiastic support for going straight to Linux
rather than Windoze.

I have phoned HP and Dell about supplying systems with Linux
pre-installed, but with no success : if I want a server, yes, but
nothing for desktops. There is one retailer here in Ottawa who supplies
Linux systems, hardware and software, servers or desktops, but that
doesn't do Geoffrey any good in Saskatoon!

Your help will be VERY MUCH appreciated. I'd better warn you, that prior
to his recent decision, Geoffrey was almost paranoiacally anti-computer
so he may need a gentle approach!

Many, many thanks
