Yup: I once worked for a lady who did ski/hiking maps of the central
Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. Her 'gotcha' was a fictitious
"Toe Jam Lake". 8-)
The OS mapping project you describe brings joy to a retired geographer's
heart, not to mention the temptation to buy a GPS. I take it JOSM is a
Linux app?
