Most compatible video codec

Hi list,

I'm trying to pull recordings off my MythTV box in a format suitable
for playing on Windows and Mac OS (and to also burn some to DVD). I'm
having trouble finding a coded to convert to that will play on the Mac
with the defaults apps that come on the Mac.

Can anyone suggest one? I'm pretty new to the realm of video codecs
on any OS. So far I've tried converting to the DVD formats available
in avidemux 2, but still haven't had much luck (but my files of course
play in linux using xine, mplayer, etc.). If I actually burn a DVD,
they do play on the Mac.

Any suggestions? I don't always want to burn to DVD, and would like
to avoid installing extra codec packs as it may be pulling them off
for use by someone else.
