I just tested Feisty Herd 3 which came out today
(http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/herd3) and it works quite nicely :)
libgimme-codec0 is installed by default (as a dependency of
totem-gstreamer) . When you try to play an MP3 file out-of-the-box,
Totem opens and gets a small window that says "searching for
appropriate applications" as it loads "Add/Remove Applications" and
then suggests packages that will allow playing of the audio:
