Hotplug

So I have an LSI SAS3442X controller which says it supports hotplug.
Its attached to an external chassis which is also hotplug.

Right now if I have /dev/sd[a-e]. If I pull one of those drives out I
see some IO errors and if I put the drive back in, it starts working
again. So that seems to work fine for hotplug.

Now should I able to put another drive in the chassis and have it
appear as /dev/sdf? Right now if I do that it doesn't look like it
works. The logs don't say anything and I don't see anything new in
sysfs. Manually running mknod doesn't let me access the device.
