I had an LG DVD reader, CD-RW from Costco a few years back. It's a
solid chunk of flaming garbage. It started making coasters within a
month of getting it (I really should've taken it back, but I rarely used
it, so I assumed it worked).

LG can't make useful optical drives; every single one I've used has
always flaked out hard after a little bit of use. It seems to be a time
thing. The one I had used to be able to read a CD most of the time, but
  even that went away with time.
