You're pretty much screwed right now if you want a robust solution
that works everywhere.

The problem is that the dhcp server hands out an IP for the default
gateway that is not within the local subnet. route craps when this
happens. You can try adding a static route to it, I have
instructions somewhere, but I'm at the lab right now doing work :).

Are you in CMPT by chance?
