Can linux still see the onboard card in the bios?
I had a machine once where the kernel would "overwrite" eth0 with eth0
(onboard NIC and pci NIC) leaving things inconsistant. Depending on
the timing a manual ifconfig like you did would work - if it was long
enough after boot. In the startup script hack I had to remove the
module, insert the module, then do the ifconfig stuff to remove the
race condition.
