Hey Rob,

Check out Kiosk mode in KDE. In Gnome (2.16) check out pessulus (gconf
lockdown editor). You can do it w/out pessulus too. Be careful of
anything that can jump to shell though (emacs, vi, etc).

You could automount the smb share and it should be available to the
users w/out the tcl script.

I have a feeling that the non-writable home dirs may be challenging though.
