Alright, I think I have this figured out. The root of my problem was some
stupidness with the external soundblaster. It seems the mute switch will on
the card will trigger software to mute but will not trigger the software to
un-mute. Also, if something is plugged in to the headphone jack and is then
unplugged, the soundblaster will also mute the audio.
Once I figured that out, everything else was pretty easy. I found the
options to allow multiple instances of XMMS, there is an option to run in
"real time" that I'll try out although I've not yet encountered any skips
without that option enabled. I've even pulled uncompressed .wav files off
an external hard drive while playing other tracks to the sound card.
I can now run 2 instances of XMMS, one for each sound card. I should
probably try and customize the skins so I can tell which one is live and
which is preview at a glance.
So far, I'm pleased with the platform. Seems a little more predictable
than MS-Windows. The only downside is the selection of DJ software is
pretty limited. I can probably make due with 2 instances of XMMS.
