If it makes you feel any better, the way to turn it on in Kubuntu is
entirely GUI.
K -> System Settings -> Appearance -> Fonts
[x] Use Anti-aliasing for fonts
and also click configure button next to that checkbox to get the
sub-pixel hinting options :)
