My Ubuntu box isn't running at the moment so I can't immediately check,
but when last I had to get above 640x480 from my Nvidia card it was in
fact necessary to hand-edit the X file in which display resolutions are
defined. Maybe search the Ubuntu wiki for articles on that topic? That's
what I ended up using, though so long ago I no longer have the URL. 8-(
