Actually, as you sent this, I had already started to download the Edgy
upgrade packages (after changing ca.ubuntu to us.ubuntu to make it faster).

There are Dapper MythTV 0.20 pakcages available!
  See
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_Dapper_Installation#MythTV_0.20_Packages

Anyway, I had that setup with Dapper, but I wanted to see if upstart
would help me, and I wanted to migrate forward because I know that Edgy
is 2.6.17, and the new 2.6.18 (which uses a lot of the same features)
has some RT patches that'd be useful for things like Stepmania at the
same time as I am recording shows.

Anyway, it took about 2 hours to download, and 30 minutes to upgrade the
packages. It left me with a non-bootable system (yay!).

They moved from the flavour-specific kernels in 6.06 to the generic
kernel in 6.10, which is partially what blew up. A KNOWN, DOCUMENTED
(as far back as March) BUG!!! I had to boot off of a 6.06 CD, choose
system rescue, and run something like update-initramfs (which fixed up
the initram disk image for the boot kernel).

I also had to blow away my MythTV capture configuration and remake it
(unexpected), as well as recompile ivtv (expected).

The system kinda starts up quicker, but not super quicker (I think it'll
be a lot better once I take out the old PATA drive I have in there as a
test and pop in a SATA drive that's reasonably quiet, when I have money,
next year).

No Lirc yet. I'm going to attack that later. It seems like it'd be
simple (ivtv gives me i2c access, and the lirc provides lirc_2c...), but
no :/
