It turns out that, due to the rather complex nature of the backend
systems (you can have a hierarchy of backends), it's important in
myth-setup to have the IPs set the same. Either both 127.0.0.1, or both
some public IP. I had set the public interface since I wanted to use my
Xbox media centre as another Myth front end. However, I didn't change
the other IP setting.
Once I set them to the same value, sanity was restored. I spent a
little time pruning duplicate rules, and now it works pretty much as
advertised.
