Gerald got it right, it is an number that increases every time the zone
changes. The date + 2 digits came was a recommendation for BIND config
documentation. I'm not sure if it made it into the RFC's which are
written as if their are as-built documentation for BIND.

Tinydns will automatically take care of that if you let it.
