That sounds like a pretty damn good way to fail if you ask me.
Before debian had kernel-packge, I found it too hard to make my own
kernel. So I followed the standard kernel.org method, which I could
find help for anywhere.
Image if I had no other option!

And I find that is completely subjective and different for every
person. Its also depends on what you're used to.
Moving from no packaging system to rpm or deb is easy. Moving from
deb to rpm is harder. Its because you already have a preconception on
how things should work.
In fact I find any system I sit down in front of annoying to use if I
don't have my .bashrc file with me. Too bad ssh doesn't forward that
too!
