So, I'm fighting with a FreeBSD 6.1 box and Asterisk. The zaptel device
code is not well and it will not compile. I'm not tied to FreeBSD for
this project so I figure this is a good time to play with ubuntu right.
After all the linux support for asterisk is much better than the FreeBSD
support.
{I'd be willing to hear stories that debunk this observation if your
willing to write them}
So I toss my ubuntu 5.10 install cd in. type server at the boot prompt
and five minutes or so later I have a working install.
apt-get install kernel-source-2.6.11 { I realize that 2.6.18.1 is the
latest source on kernel.org but I could not apt-get that!}
then I go try make menuconfig - no make. So I apt-get install make. Now
no gcc so I apt-get install gcc and I still can't make menuconfig.
I would like another linux distribution that comes with all the stuff I
need to build kernel source and compile applications from source without
any GUI anywhere.
Is there a simple apt-get that I am missing that will turn my userland
server into a development capable box? Could I generate traffic on the
mailing list by asking for a better linux distro that would enable me to
run from a console and do CLI stuff and compile from source without
jumping through many hoops?
Thanks for your input.
