I hear that a small linux users group has sprung up at wardrop
engineering. They are holding an installfest Saturday November 4th 10am
to 2pm. Email David if you are interested in going.

I received this reply from Bouley, David [David.Bouley@Wardrop.com] in
response to my query that went something like (Hey, would you like a
hand from some slg members, could I tell them about your installfest).

Hello, Tim.

Sure, if there are people in the SLG that would like to help or just hang
out and chat about Linux, or check out the new Mandriva 2007 distro.,
they are more than welcome.

As for the people in our office LUG, Linux is a very new concept for
them. Even though we work in an engineering firm, the PC (to many of
them) is still a "magic" box that just does things - or not, when
we're talking about Microsoft ;)

Only recently have I been able to get a hand-full of them to understand
the concept of Linux (the OS) and how it uses something called KDE or
Gnome to draw windows on the screen.

Last month I did a demonstration of Mandriva's new 2007 release with
AIGLX/XGL. Those who attended the meeting were very interested in what
they saw... hence the idea for an Installfest. I've been going out to
some of my co-worker's homes to do Linux installs, but an Installfest
would save me a lot of Saturdays at other people's homes.... I'll most
likely be "supporting" most of them while they get to know their new
desktop environments once they're up and running.

Anyway, I'd be glad to meet some of the SLG members. Those Wardrop
staff attending would probably enjoy hearing other people that me talk
about Linux, since I seem to do most of the talking at our LUG meetings
anyway. ;)

I'm not expecting a huge turn-out, which is probably good for my first
Installfest; at the moment I've got six interested people. Tomorrow is
our monthly lunch-time LUG meeting, so I'll hopefully have a better
idea of how many people to expect after that.

Thanks for the e-mail. I'll keep you posted.

and the original email that started it all off:

We're happy to announce that we will be hosting an Installfest on
Saturday, November 4th, at the Wardrop Sasaktoon office, in the first
floor boardroom. People who would like to bring their home PC or laptop
to the event to have the Linux operating system installed should fill
out the attached .rtf computer registration form and return it to either
me or Robin Sun before October 27th.

Installs will be scheduled between 10:00am and 2:00pm, three per hour
(twelve in total), and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Linux software will be provided FREE to you.

**You don't need a computer to attend!** Stop by during the Installfest
to learn more and chit-chat about the world of Linux and Open Source
software. We will have a system set-up so you can try out the Linux
operating system yourself, along with Mandriva's new 3D accelerated
destkop environment.

Mandriva (http://www.mandriva.com) will also be providing promotional
S.W.A.G. (stuff we all get) to be handed out to the attendees. So stop
by and get some free stuff.

Refer to the attached .pdf for more info. You can also download the
.rtf form from the LUG's website at:

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or Robin.
