   That did it! Isn't hindsight wonderful. Always go for the simple
solution.

   I tried the compile and the kernel produced booted. It also turns out
that it wasn't something that I hadn't turned on but rather something that
I had turned on. If smp is turned on the kernel doesn't want to boot. I
don't know what this would have to do with the libata driver but it
definitely doesn't like it.
