SATA boot problem

Hi folks. I'm in the process of compiling a kernel on a new machine here
on the UofS campus. We're using the Slackware distribution (which we have
had much success with in the past and which I have used for a dozen years
now) version 10.2. We installed using the stock 'sata.i' kernel onto a
sata drive with no problems. The stock kernel boots ok but when I compile
a kernel with sata support it hangs. This is the first time that I've
tried using a sata boot disk and frankly it feels like the old days when
you banged your head against the wall trying to get a sound card to work.

I've tried using the stock kernel sources that come with Slackware,
2.4.31 and also 2.6.17 but get the same boot problem with either one. I
don't think that there is anything bizarre about the mobo ... it's the
first one I've seen with only one IDE connector and multiple sata
connectors but I've been expecting to see that anyway.

So, obviously it is possible to compile a kernel that will boot on the
machine since the stock one works but not, apparently, without divine
inspiration. I'm at the brick wall stage so I'll ask if anyone has any
ideas about this problem.

Life would be so much easier if we could just look at the source code.
