Off-topic - KVMs and resolutions

Sorry for the off-topic post - this is probably a hardware question.

Installing an LCD monitor with a resolution of 1400x1050.
When attached via KVM, I can only set it it 1024x768 or 1600x1200
(includes trying it in XP with Viewsonic driver disk installed). If the
monitor connects straight to the computer, everything is fine.

Does anyone know about KVMs and monitor resolutions? Having never read
up on KVM stuff, I was under the impression that KVMs had maximum
supported resolutions, but not that they had to be specific ones.

On a more linuxy note, I was playing with the Kororaa liveCD last week
(live CD with xgl). Even my Mac friends had some "wows". Very cool.
