Not at all.
Does the knoppix CD detect your controller?
If it does, once you boot, mount / (from the install on the HD) at /mnt/.
Then run "grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ hd0" assuming you're
using grub and hd0 is your primary HD.
If I "cat /mnt/boot/grub/device.map" I see "(hd0) /dev/hda" so I know
to use hd0, because hda is my primary.
If the knoppix doesn't work, we'll have to create a boot CD for you
that will see your controller.
