Well the Ubuntu Live CD doesn't support my SATA2 controller (need a kernel update for this) so I'll have to plug the drive into a SATA1 port for this to work. Then, I copy all the information from /boot on my hard drive to the boot dir on the Live CD's ramdisk or whatever it uses, so that grub-install will use the correct grub information. I think that should restore my MBR to it's original state.

Does this sound like it will work?

install and run the grub-install command to return everything back to normal. I'd like this to go as smoothly as possible, as I ran into some

Burn a Linux install CD (pretty much any distro will do, except Slackware, which runs lilo only).  Ubuntu live CDs are great for this (I'm sure Conrad has a few to spare).  Boot, run, enjoy.
